Our Organic Sea Buckthorn is so beneficial, we offer it three different ways to ensure you find the supplement that meets your needs.

What is Sea Buckthorn?

Sea buckthorn is a spiny shrub native to Europe and Asia, highly renowned for its numerous benefits both in diet and skincare. Containing nearly 200 nutritional and bioactive compounds, this plant is recognized as a true superfood.

In fact, sea buckthorn is so important to the ecosystem and economy that in 1999, various countries including China, India, and Canada established the International Sea Buckthorn Association (ISA) (Wang1, et. al.). The ISA supports sea buckthorn’s role in environmental protection, economic development, and human health.

At Lekithos, we recognize sea buckthorn’s importance and protect its nutritional value by offering the purest, certified USDA Organic, Vegan and Non-GMO Organic Sea Buckthorn Fruit Powder, Oil and Capsules.

Our Organic Sea Buckthorn Powder originates from organic farms in Northern Italy. There, the berries are collected, kernels are mechanically separated, and the pulp is ground down into a tart, flakey powder. Just one serving features vitamins, minerals, omega fatty acids, and more!

The Organic Sea Buckthorn Capsules undergo the exact same manufacturing process, aside from extra fine milling prior to encapsulation, as the Powder. Though they are smaller, one serving (3 capsules) contains 1125mg of Organic Sea Buckthorn Fruit Extract, as well as Omega-6, Omega-7, and Omega-9 Fatty Acids!

What are the benefits?

“The medicinal value of sea buckthorn has been recorded in the Tibetan medical classic “Somaratsa,” dating back to as early as the first half of the eighth century” (Wang1, et. al.). Traditional healing practices describe the plant to assist slow digestion and ulcers, stomach aches, cardiovascular problems, liver injury, and skin diseases. Modern medicine reports on sea buckthorn showing anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties.

The powers come down to what it's made of: fatty acids, bioactive compounds, vitamins and minerals.

Fatty Acids

Fatty acids are the building blocks of fat and play an important role in energy storage, nutrient absorption, and cell structure. There are three types of fatty acids: saturated, unsaturated, and trans fats. Essential fatty acids Omega-3 and Omega-6 are vital for our health and can only be obtained through diet.

Omega-6 provides energy, supports skin barrier function and reduces inflammation which can assist cholesterol levels and nerve health. Omega-7 supports skin regeneration including collagen production, hydrates tissues such as the eyes, and even helps manage cholesterol levels. Omega-9 is no different from the rest as it lowers inflammation, aids blood sugar and cholesterol control, and increases energy levels.

Bioactive Compounds

The National Cancer Institute defines a bioactive compound as “a type of chemical found in small amounts in plants and certain foods…that may promote good health..are being studied in the prevention of cancer, heart disease, and other diseases.” In other words, bioactive compounds are naturally-occuring antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial chemicals that reduce the risk of disease by supporting immunity, improving gut health, and preventing cancer growth.

The bioactive compounds most prevalent in sea buckthorn are carotenoids, polyphenols, and flavonoids.

Carotenoids absorb blue and green light to reflect the bright orangey-yellow pigment that the berries display. Though they contribute to the physical aspect of the fruit, these antioxidative compounds can reduce the risk of certain cancers and eye diseases. The content of carotenoids in a sea buckthorn plant varies based on species.

Sea buckthorn has been reported to have a higher content of polyphenols than oranges, blueberries, and strawberries. Polyphenols antioxidize by neutralizing free radicals that are known to damage cells and encourage aging, inflammation, and diseases. These compounds include phenolic acids and flavonoids. Salicylic acid is a commonly recognized phenolic acid, primarily used in skincare to treat acne, warts, calluses, and psoriasis by reducing inflammation and regulating moisture.

Flavonoids are nutrient-rich compounds that, in addition to antioxidant activity, assist in inflammation, cell damage, and chronic diseases including diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Modern studies have identified 95 flavonoids in sea buckthorn and linked regular consumption to reduced cholesterol, better blood vessel function, and lower risk of stroke and heart attack.

It doesn’t stop there — Sea buckthorn is recognized as a superfood and its vitamin and mineral content proves that.

Vitamins and Minerals

In just 100g of sea buckthorn berries, the vitamin C levels are higher than 100g of orange, banana, peach, and mango!

Sea buckthorn, a great source of vitamin C, offers a variety of other vitamins and minerals including Vitamin E, Potassium, Magnesium, and Zinc - making a powerful supplement even stronger.

Vitamin C continues the fruit’s theme of antioxidant activity while it supports the immune system, aids collagen in skin firmness and wrinkle reduction, enhances iron absorption, reduces risk of cataracts, helps manage blood pressure and heart disease, and promotes brain health. Another strong immune-supporting antioxidant, vitamin E encourages healthy skin by hydrating and reducing wrinkles and inflammation, helps regulate cholesterol, and prevents clotting.

Minerals are categorized into essential and nonessential. Essential minerals are vital nutrients necessary for sustaining life that can only be obtained through the foods we eat. These can be further separated into macro- and microminerals, requiring more or less than 100g daily respectively.

Commonly known as a sleep and tension aid, magnesium plays a role in more than 300 biochemical reactions including muscle relaxation and heart rhythm. It is required for energy production and glycolysis. Potassium regulates fluid balance while supporting healthy blood pressure to reduce the risk of stroke and disease, strengthen bones and prevent kidney stones. Antioxidant micromineral, Zinc is a vital trace element necessary for immune function and injury repair that supports DNA repair and helps maintain our senses of smell and taste. When consumed daily, zinc can improve skin health and optimize cognitive function.

A single serving of Lekithos Organic Sea Buckthorn Powder contains 10mg Vitamin C, 2mg Vitamin E, 45mg Potassium, 3mg Magnesium, and 0.5mg Zinc!

Organic Sea Buckthorn is a tart twist to your favorite treat with overflowing immune, antioxidant, skin and organ support and benefits.
